Another Reason the French are Mad at Us

France was always known to produce some of the finest wines in the world. But now many small winery's in California, in business for over one hundred years, have surpassed the French in the making of fine wines. The climate and soil of California is far better for producing a variety of wine grapes. Not to mention their meticulous attention to detail in the fermentation process. This fact is well known by French wine makers and it leaves a very bitter taste in their mouths. Still though we do have many things that come from France to be thankful for. Just think where we would be without the common garden snail.
Inspired by Bill’s article I did a quick google search and quickly came up with some solid supporting facts. CNN reported the following on August 23, 2004 in an article with a title that says it all.
Can Anything Save French Wine
'Clearly, these are desperate times for an industry that exported $6.9 billion worth of product last year, and which employs some 300,000 people. As recently as the 1990s, one in three imported bottles bought by Americans was French. Today, it's down to 15 percent. Despite particularly good vintages, U.S. sales of French wine declined more than 10 percent last year in both volume and dollar value, according to Information Resources International.'
And in an article dated November 11, 2004 Decanter.com reported:
‘This is in contrast to overall French wine imports to the US, which were down 13% over the last 12 months. ‘
So market share down by over half and double digit declines in volume and revenue in the last 12 months. Looks like the French had better concentrate on getting people to like snails!

French wine sale in America down, from 1/3 of market to 15%. California wine is good. But variety is the spice of life. Every bottle could be like snowflakes, a little bit different.
So all different kinds and countries could be ok. I think maybe the French were perceived poorly in America for their pompous behavior in the UN negotiations during the time leading to war at the craddle of civilization. I remember hearing alot of negative french press. The only way to do coffee. The trade balance is not too good. The U.S. was founded on the French help, to free States from England. They gave us the Statue of Liberty. We helped them in WW1 and 2. Now relations are not too nice. Wine sales down. I Vote for two buck Chuck. California has all the varietal sub climates to achieve many different vines. Late Harvest Dessert wine, or Chard or Cab, Or Welches Concord Grape.
